"Peek into the Vault" with Curator Helen Jean and Costume and Textile Conservator, Martha Grimm

A generous invitation is extended to all ACI Members from the Phoenix Art Museum Docents to attend a special educational lecture on the practices of collection care and conservation for costumes and textiles. The Jacquie Dorrance Curator of Fashion Design, Helen Jean, will give a virtual tour of the fashion storage vault to demonstrate the management and storage of various garments and textiles. Following Helen, costume and textile conservator, Martha Grimm, will share insights into her expertise as a cares for, mends, and preserves textiles.

Optional Lunch at Palette - immediately following the lecture, attendees are invited to have lunch together in Palette Restaurant. Lunch is optional and the responsibility of each guest. Reservations are highly encouraged.

After earning a graduate degree in Textiles from Kansas State University and using a National Endowment for the Arts Master Apprenticeship Grant to learn as an intern in the St. Louis Art Museum’s textile conservation laboratory, Martha Winslow Grimm established a conservation business serving museums throughout the Midwest and Southwest regions of the United States. Martha, a native Phoenician, returned to Arizona and continued working as a costume and textile conservator at the Phoenix Art Museum, Heard Museum, Musical Instrument Museum and at multiple museums and historical houses throughout the nation. She has worked at Phoenix Art Museum with the three Fashion Design Department curators and two of the Asian Arts curators. Martha organizes and implements each year a nationwide service project which helps small museums with their costume, textile, and accessories collections. Since 2007 events have occurred from Maine to California, from Virginia to the state of Washington and places in between.
